Monográfico: Teoría y praxis arqueológica.-- Monografikoa: Teoria eta praxis arkeologikoaSe ha convertido en un tópico afirmar que la arqueología teórica no ha tenido mucha fortuna en nuestro país, que está dominado por posturas profundamente empiricistas. Esto es en cierta medida verdad, pero no del todo, al menos si lo observamos en perspectiva comparativa. En la actualidad, España no se encuentra en el furgón de cola de los desarrollos teóricos y el dossier de Arkeogazte es parte de la demostración. En realidad, está bastante por delante que otras tradiciones consideradas más potentes, como la francesa y la alemana. Trabajos como los de Hernando (2011), Fernández (2006), Lull (2007) y Criado (2012), entre otros, así lo demuestran. Asimismo, revistas como Complutum y Trabajos de Prehistoria han sido testigo de interesantes debates durante las últimas dos décadas y en sus páginas se han publicado tanto propuestas teóricas como trabajos teóricamente orientados.Peer Reviewe

Towards another archaeology. Ten proposals

[ES] La teoría arqueológica ha cambiado notablemente durante la última década. Muchos arqueólogos ya no defienden muchas de las premisas básicas de la arqueología procesual y posprocesual, pero hasta ahora se han propuesto pocas teorías que sean suficientemente ambiciosas y consistentes como para reemplazar a los antiguos paradigmas. Vivimos por lo tanto en un estado de indefinición paradigmática. En este artículo propongo un análisis de los elementos críticos que están en juego en este momento de transición y sugiero nuevos caminos para hacer la disciplina más relevante científica y socialmente.[EN] Archaeological theory has changed noticeably during the last decade. Many of the basic premises of both post-processual and processual archaeology are no longer defended by many archaeologists, but few theories have been proposed that are ambitious and consistent enough to replace the former paradigms. We are thus living in a state of paradigmatic vagueness and transition. In this article, I propose an analysis of the critical elements at play in this transitional moment and suggest new paths to make the discipline more scientific and socially relevant.Peer Reviewe

The first part deals with two theoretical concerns. My first concern has to do with how we know things as archaeologists working with the recent past. In particular, I am interested in the role of recognition and witnessing in the production of archaeological knowledge. Excavating Memory, Burying History. Lessons from the Spanish Civil War

This chapter deals with a case in which work that aimed at rekindling a critical memory of a conflictual past ends up producing a certain form of oblivion instead. The work in question is the archaeological research we conducted at two battlefields of the Spanish Civil War. During our work, we found the traumatic history of the war neutralized through memory practices sponsored, in one case, by government institutions and in another by grassroots associations. In both cases, the involuntary memories materialized in things insisted in disrupting the comfortable narrative that people tried to impose on them. I will argue that archaeologists should work to channel this material memory so as to construct critical accounts of the past that are helpful to foster a more reflexive citizenry

Artistic Expression and Material Culture in Celtic Gallaecia

The Iron Age art of northwestern Iberia (the ancient Gallaecia) is scarcely known by scholars outside Spain and Portugal, due to the local character of most publications dealing with this topic. This has deprived archaeologists of the knowledge of an original culture, whose artistic expressions owe as much to the Mediterranean world as to the Atlantic one. An overview of the main characteristics of this distinctive material culture tradition, within the social context of its production and use, is offered along with a catalogue of the most outstanding pieces of Gallaecian art (sculpture, jewellery, bronzework, pottery)
